#9: Jesse (Minecraft Story Mode)

I’ve heard a lot of negative things involving Minecraft: Story Mode, but I’m honestly sad that it gets so much hate. It’s not an entirely bad story thanks to characters such as Petra and Lukas. However, I will admit that the player character leaves a bit to be desired.

A newbie Minecraft Player, the character known as 'Jesse' starts off as a misfit rookie who answers the call for adventure and becomes a hero by defeating a big evil. And... that's pretty much everything we get about them. That’s not to say Jesse is as bad as The New Frontier: for starters, Jesse is the first character whose customizable. They can be male or female, and white, African American or somewhere in between. And while Catherine Tuber does an amazing job portraying a confident female hero, the male version of Jesse is voiced by Patton Oswald, the voice of Remy in Ratatouille, and he does an amazing job here. As a player character, they are everything you need them to be. However, as a character, there’s not much for them to do on their own. They do mention that they like potatoes, they’re horrible at lying, and they have an adorable relationship with their pet pig Reuben, but other than that, their personality and outlook on others is completely determinant on the player’s choices. As such, they’re great for putting myself in their shoes, but they don’t leave much of an impact on me or give me a reason to care other than that, ‘They’re me!’ It’s good, but because of their lack of outside character development, I had to put them lower on the list than normal. Sorry Jesse; you’re great to live through, but you don’t have much without a player behind you.
